1. Garden Hose Diameter
The most standard diameters in garden hoses are 1/2″, 5/8″, and 3/4″.
The diameters reflected above are the thickness of the hose itself and not the fittings or connections to the faucet.
Most hoses have the same fittings or connections that will fit into the garden faucet regardless of the diameter of the hose.

The diameter indicates the flow of water that will come out of the hose, so the smaller the diameter, the lower the water flow. The larger the diameter, the higher the water flow.
For example, the 1/2″ diameter, which is the smallest of the three and is the lightest of the three.
The 5/8″ diameter is my recommendation in all hoses and is the most common size you will find on the market.

And then, the 3/4″ diameter is heavy and will require some strength to handle.
Now, with the 3/4″ diameter garden hose, you will get a lot of water, but again, it will be the heaviest of the three.

When considering what garden hose you should buy, you need to also think about what you are using it for.
For example, suppose you are in a smaller yard or have a regular-sized garden. In that case, a 1/2″ diameter might be enough because usually, you have enough flow for a hose-end sprayer or a water wand, and they are much lighter.

Now, with the 5/8″ diameter garden hose, I tend to recommend more because the water flows a little faster, and it makes the watering runs a little faster.
The 3/4″ diameter garden hose is great for filling buckets or troughs or something like that.

Overall It’s better to use a larger diameter hose because the water flow will be much more significant, and the job will be faster.
2. Garden Hose Strengths
The other thing you want to consider is the garden hose strengths.
Garden hoses are made in many different strengths, but the most common strengths for homeowners are these three as follows:
- Medium-duty.
- Heavy-duty.
- Super-duty/Industrial.
Medium Duty Garden Hose
The medium-duty garden hose is the lightest of the three and is ideal for a small garden.
Heavy Duty Garden Hose
A heavy-duty hose is a little more robust than a medium hose.
Heavy-duty hoses are still suitable but can be challenging for a small garden and not good enough for a more extensive garden.
You’ll only need a medium-duty hose, for example, if you live on a small city lot or have a regular garden where you are pulling through the grass.
I suggest you save money and get the medium-duty garden hose because heavy-duty can be challenging to manage in small gardens.
Super Duty/Industrial Garden Hose
The super-duty garden hose is the thickest and most potent of the three strengths.
The stronger the hose, the heavier it will be.
It can also withstand more gravel, concrete sidewalks, and sun, which means a super-duty garden hose can be exposed to the sun for days.
For example, if you don’t like to store your hoses in the winter, a super-duty hose is more likely to stand up to bad weather than your medium-duty hose.
Consider upgrading to a super-duty hose if you have more gravel plus more stuff that your hose will be going over, or maybe you need it to sit in the sun for longer.
So, getting the super-duty strength can last longer for you. In the long run, you will pay less money.
3. Garden Hose Length
You want to consider a couple of other things, and that is the garden hose length.
Garden hoses usually come in 25, 50, 75, or 100-foot lengths.
You want to ensure that when you choose a hose that will reach where you need it to.
However, you don’t want to get a hose that’s longer than you need because that’s just going to add extra bulk when you’re trying to store it, and it’s a lot heavier when it’s too long.
So maybe go through and get a rough idea of your area and how long your hose should be before deciding which garden hose to buy.
