Not having an A/C or a fan in your home during the summer days and with no hope of relief can be very uncomfortable. The truth is that it is possible to cool your home with nothing more than a strategically placed fan and a few small daily measures. This technique is known as the stack or chimney effect. Here is how to do it in 3 simple steps. 

1. Draw Cold Air Inward

The key is to take advantage of the cooler outdoor temperatures during the night and exchange the warm air inside the house for the cooler air outside.

First, choose the room in your home that you want to cool the most. Let’s say you need to cool your bedroom. Open a window in your bedroom, since that’s where the cool air will come in. Next, move to a different room located on the other side of the house from the one you chose; in this case, from your bedroom, move to a separate room on the other side of the house. 

Once you are in the other room of the house, open a window and place a fan next to it pointing outward. That fan will blow out the hot air and create a low-pressure system in the house that will suck in cool air from outside through the window you left open in the other room, in this case, your bedroom.

2. Circulate the Air in the Basement

If you have a basement, it will more than likely be a few degrees cooler than the upper floors of your home. Distribute that cool air throughout the house with a basement fan that points upward. 

3. Close the Windows

During the day, it is essential to close the windows as soon as the outside temperature exceeds the inside temperature. You want to keep as much cool night air as possible. Then let your home’s insulation do most of the work to keep it cooler than outside.

Direct-Drive vs. Belt-Drive Fan

There are only two types of arrangements that you can go with to drive your fan, including a direct-drive arrangement and the other is a belt-drive arrangement. 

Direct-Drive Fan

A direct-drive fan means that the motor directly drives the fan wheel. In other words, there is nothing between the motor and the wheel other than a coupling that joins the motor shaft to the fan shaft. So the motor is directly affecting the speed of your fan. For example, if it runs at 60 hertz, it will run at motor speed. 

The advantages of direct drive systems are that they require fewer parts and less maintenance to operate. For example, all you have is a motor sometimes mounted directly on a wheel or attached to the fan shaft, which eliminates the need to maintain belts, gears, and bushings over the years. Another reason why direct-drive fans are preferable is the space they take up. In addition, they can fit in a much smaller space and are often used in restricted applications. 

Direct drive is ideal for huge fans where the motor must drive the shaft because it will lose too much power through a belt-driven arrangement. Also, the poles of a belt-driven fan will pull too much on a large fan shaft in the lateral direction, and the motor will burn out quickly. I recommend that for large fans, once you get past the 200 hp plateau, stick with direct drive fans.

Belt-Drive Fan

The belt drive arrangement allows you to vary the speed of the motor. For example, if you have a fan with an 1800 rpm motor but want it to run at 2500 rpm. In this case, using a belt drive system will allow you to run the fan at 2500 rpm. 

As I mentioned earlier, the advantage of a belt-driven system is that a broader range of speeds is available. Belt-driven fans are commonly used for material handling applications where you don’t want the motor to be compromised and directly drive the wheel necessarily. You want a belt buffer between the motor and the fan to absorb some wear and tear that the fan will experience.
