In that case, that is an indication that you have a good air conditioning system.

A traditional Hygrometer uses a metal coil coated with chemically impregnated paper.

Any change in humidity or water vapor causes the coil to bend, which causes the indicator hand to move.

Never touch the coil with your fingers, as this will contaminate it.

However, we can do a few things to control the Humidity inside our homes by practicing the following tips:

  1. Adjust air vents as needed.
  2. Take shorter showers.
  3. Use ceiling or stand fans.
  4. Use portable or whole house humidifier system.
  5. Mulch all indoor plants, also known as top dressing your plants.

1. Adjust Air Vents as Needed

Air balancing is something that you can do as a homeowner, and it is a straightforward process.

You would want to know how to balance the air in your home because it is widespread that sometimes you may have some hot and cold spots in the house; this means that the temperatures are uneven.

For example, in a ventilation duct, you may notice a little lever sticking out of the side that controls a damper built into the vent.

If you move that little handle, you will notice that the damper will close a little and restrict the airflow coming out.

If you are getting too much airflow in one room, you might have a little bit of air in that room in the winter; when you are running the heating, it might be too warm.

Conversely, the room next door might not be getting enough air and might be a little cold.

If that’s your case, you can go ahead and grab the vent handle and close it a little bit.

And that’s going to restrict the airflow coming into that room and divert that air to the other room that needs the air.

Now just a couple of things that I never recommend closing the damper completely.

You can close it off about eighty percent, and once you start to get to that point.

What you would notice is that you may start to hear the air coming through; it gets a little bit louder because we are restricting that air, which is something that we want to avoid.

Even if it’s a room that’s never used, I never suggest entirely shutting off the ventilation, which can cause problems to the way the system works.

So that’s something simple that you can do as a homeowner go from room to room and make simple adjustments to help fine-tune the amount of air that you need in that room.

Depending on the season, you may have to open and close a couple of them in the winter, and in the summer, you may have to reverse those vents adjustments.

Another tip for a two-story house with two thermostats, one downstairs and one upstairs, is beneficial to have a two-degree difference.

For example, when you turn on the heating in winter, we know that the warm air rises and tends to increase.

Often, the upstairs gets too hot because all the heat reaches the downstairs floor ends uprising.

So what you have to do is readjust the downstairs thermostat with a two-degree difference from the upstairs thermostat.

For example, you would set the upstairs thermostat at seventy-five degrees and the downstairs thermostat at seventy-three.

This way, you are not putting too much heat down and sending it back up because that will cause uneven temperatures.

And then it would be vice versa that in the summer when you’re running cooling.

The cold air will want to come down, so when you’re running cooling upstairs sometimes, it can get over cool downstairs a little bit because that cold air is falling downstairs.

So, these are a couple of tips to help balance the air and maintain a more even temperature in your home, and it’s a simple thing to do.

2. Take Shorter Showers

When you shower, you will need to get as much steam out of the bathroom as possible so that the moisture does not condense and cause more problems.

It would be best to run the bathroom exhaust fan the entire time you are showering and for up to 30 minutes after your shower.

Not running the exhaust fan is the worst thing you can do, as you want to get the steam out as quickly as possible.

Therefore, when taking a shower turning the bathroom exhaust fan should be the first step in preventing mold in your bathroom.

Consider installing a perfect exhaust fan and make sure the exhaust fan is exhausting to the outside; if the fan goes through the attic, run it to the soffit or ridge vent.

For a downstairs bathroom, make sure the exhaust fan exits to the outside and not into another living space.

When controlling moisture to prevent mold in the bathroom, it is essential to make sure your faucets are not dripping.

Suppose you have a small drip or something like that, and your faucet fixes it immediately.

In that case, it’s surprising how much evaporation occurs from these drips.

The more moisture there is in the bathroom, the more likely it is that water can cause secondary damage.

Like in the drywall and ceiling causing mold, fix these things as soon as possible if you notice a leak.

Also, if you notice your toilet leaking or running continuously, get that fixed.

Try checking around the toilet flange.

If you see water coming out from beneath the toilet, call a local plumber to fix all these leaks as soon as possible.

Here is another straightforward way to get the water out of your bathroom quickly; using a shower squeegee.

What you want to do is even if you have the exhaust fan running.

At this point, you had the plumbing fixed; if you don’t get rid of the water condensed inside your shower, it could quickly take forever for the water to move out of the exhaust fan.

So, after showering, push all the water down into the tub drain using a shower squeegee, so you don’t have to be concern about all of it evaporating.

This is a great tool to use in your shower; it may take a little time to get used to squeegee after every shower, and your exhaust fan won’t have to run as long.

Another simple tip to get more water out of the bathroom as quickly as possible to help prevent mold and mildew is the shower mat.

So you have to get that shower mat dry here is a little trick on caring for a shower mat.

What you need to do is pull the shower mat up and let the water drain.

And then, you can take the mat and stick it to the side of the tub.

This way, the shower mat doesn’t stay wet and moldy and gets all that water under the shower mat to go down the drain.

Next, take the squeegee and squeeze the rest of the water out into the drain.

This will also help eliminate soap scum and different things like you don’t have to clean the shower or bathroom as often.

Another tip is to think about doing a little remodeling in your bathroom or just repainting your bathroom.

The good idea is to apply mildew-resistant paint.

A recommended product called M1 is probably available at Home Depot, Lowe’s, Ace Hardware.

M1 is an additive that you put inside the paint that prevents mold and mildew from growing.

Remember, this is your secondary area; the more steam you have in your bathroom, the wetter the paint will be.

And if the bathroom wall remains damp and does not have a mold-resistant capability, the mold will grow.

So be sure to treat the paint with a mold-resistant product so that the paint itself can resist mold.

3. Use Ceiling or Stand Fan

If you have ceiling or stand fans, keeping them on throughout the day can humidify your home.

Appropriate ventilation helps keep the air from becoming stale and humid, so air circulation is essential.

Always place standing fans near open windows to increase airflow in your home and reduce humidity levels.

4. Use Portable or Whole House Humidifier System

If you cannot invest in a permanent whole-home humidification system, I suggest purchasing a portable dehumidifier.

As I mentioned earlier, moisture in the home can cause many problems; often, it can lead to the cause of mold and dampness.

Moisture can also lead to rooms feeling stuffy and musty-smelling.

Dehumidifiers take out dust, dirt, and moisture from the air making the environment more comfortable.

Besides, when doing laundry on a 1,000 spin cycle, about 3 pounds of water is retained in the laundry room.

Placing a dehumidifier in the laundry room can drastically speed up the drying cycle.

When used in your home’s central location, the humidifier will draw Humidity throughout the house.

The air first passes through a panel filter that removes dust and dirt.

This filter is designed to last the life of your dehumidifier.

It is washable, so it should never need to be replaced.

The air is then cooled by condensing the moisture, which is removed and deposited in a water reservoir.

The dry air is reheated using the heat generated by the dehumidification process and returned to the room.

Once the reservoir is full, you can quickly remove it.

Dehumidifiers automatically shut off when the reservoir is removed or if the reservoir becomes full.

5. Mulch All Indoor Plants

Mulching or top dressing with decorative rocks in your houseplants is one of the essential steps you should take to control indoor humidity levels.

Also, mulch or a top dressing to your houseplants will prevent moisture from evaporating; it will also keep your plant healthy and add a nice finished look.

You can find several things for mulching or top dressing your plants, such as:

  • Aquarium gravel.
  • Crushed seashells.
  • Decorative colored rocks.
